We are so excited to invite you to the 2023 Myra Wolfgang Awards Gala! Our third gala will celebrate the achievements of Metro Detroit Jews and social movements making the region more habitable for us all. Our honorees are the incredible Mary Ellen Gurewitz, Maureen Taylor, and Cosecha Michigan. Please join us in celebrating their incredible work!
We will celebrate these contemporary activists in the memory of Myra Wolfgang, a feminist labor leader in Detroit, who was given the title, the 'Battling Belle of Detroit.' She earned this nickname through her work as the chair of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the chief executive officer of Local 705. Deeply embedded in organizing strikes and minimum wage campaigns, she consulted in contract talks for dozens of local unions. In memory of Myra, and the long history of Jewish progressives and leftists in Metro Detroit, we will celebrate work—both within and outside the Jewish community—that is moving us towards a better world. We hope you join us to reflect and celebrate these inspiring figures!
We also host the Myra Wolfgang Awards to celebrate DJJ's growth and work to organize the Metro Detroit Jewish community to support movements for racial and economic justice. We are so proud of how we have grown as an organization, and want to share our accomplishments with as many people as we can! We hope you will buy a ticket or join the Host Committee to demonstrate your continued investment in our work.
