How can we win a people's Detroit city budget? -- with Latkes

Come join your fellow progressive Jews in learning about upcoming efforts to stop the city from waiving property taxes for billionaire developers at the expense of schools, libraries, and transit! We want city funds to be used for people instead of corporations! Alongside prepping for our budget campaign, we'll be unveling DJJ's newly written Theory of Change, doing some Chanukkah learning and ritual, and some end-of-year reflections and ambitions.

This will also be a latke potluck! Bring your own or another snack, and bring a friend! This is a great opportunity to plug into a beautiful, powerful, progressive Jewish community here in Detroit.

A note on how DJJ is relating to Israel-Palestine right now:

In conversations over the last two months, we have seen how so many in the DJJ community are grieving and activated by what is going on in Israel-Palestine. And yet that shared grief has not translated into a unified politics around Israel-Palestine—and that is ok! DJJ has not taken 'formal' stances about Israel-Palestine in the past. Our board is in the process of exploring if our Mission, Core Principles and (new!) Theory of Change call us to shift that orientation and, if so, in what ways. So, as of now, it remains outside DJJ's focus and space. The focus of this meeting will be on the upcoming City Budget Campaign that will have an immense impact on the lives of Detroiters.  We are committed to being a community where we can remain focused on our mission of mobilizing local Jews to build towards a world where all of us and our neighbors have the resources we need to thrive, even as we grapple with painful disagreements around Israel-Palestine. We hope you will enter the space with an open heart to those in it, whether you are aligned or not. If what we are describing here is not the space for you right now, that is ok! The work will be here when you’re ready, and you’re welcome here!
