Goodbye to our Summer Intern!

I knew that my summer at DJJ was going to fly by! I expected to leave this internship with community and political organizing skills-and I am thanks to the wonderful staff at DJJ. Seeing the operations of such a small and close knit staff was new for me. Each staff member engaged with me and took time out of their schedule this summer to teach me about their work at DJJ and I got to experience how passionate and lovely each of these individuals are. This work is not easy, and I feel lucky to have been part of a staff that recognizes the importance of self care. Next time you see Stevie, Allie, Laura, or Lisa - make sure to thank them for everything they’re doing for our community. They care so deeply about all of you and the work that we’re doing. What I did not expect to leave with was a new Jewish community. As a Michigan transplant, I knew little to nothing about Detroit and was excited to take this internship and spend more time getting to know the place and the people. I truly enjoyed engaging with those of you I did get to meet. It’s no surprise that DJJniks are all kind, engaging, thoughtful, and inspirational in their own way. Thank you to those of you that came to Havdallah earlier this month, it was the perfect ending to a summer at DJJ. Don’t worry - you’ll be seeing more of me! I’ll be staying on as a volunteer and will be attending the Myra Wolfgang Awards next month. Thank you all for everything!

In solidarity,
Natalie
