A Jewish Historical Society of Michigan ROVING SYMPOSIUM: Defending Freedom: Jewish Detroit’s Response to Anti-Semitism and Hate.
While some Detroiters looked the other way, many members of Detroit’s Jewish Community found common ground with other targeted victims and chose to join the campaigns against bigots and exploiters threatening the basic human rights of Jews, African Americans, and union organizers. Jewish Historical Society of Michigan (JHSM) historians will explore the Jewish responses to anti-Semitism, anti-unionism and civil rights issues from the 1930s to the 1967 Rebellion in this Roving Symposium, presented with Detroit Jews for Justice (DJJ). Defending Freedom is one part of a four-part series that DJJ and JHSM are partnering on. If you'd like to learn more about what happened during the 1967 Rebellion and afterwards, visit our '67 Rebellion bus tour event page for content and registration information.
Using a chartered bus as a classroom, and visiting sites relevant to the discussion, participants of Defending Freedom will witness the impact of how civil, economic and religious rights issues affected our local Jewish community, and how these issues inspired many to become activists. The exploration will include stops at the Birwood Avenue Wall (sometimes referred to as the Wall of Shame), Hart Plaza, and the Bethel Transformation Center. Much of this tour will be outdoors. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. JHSM tours depart as planned, rain or shine. There are no refunds.
The Defending Freedom symposium is on Sunday, June 11. Bus transportation leaves promptly at 10AM from Congregation Shaarey Zedek and will return around 3:00 p.m. Meet at Congregation Shaarey Zedek at 27375 Bell Rd.
