As part of the Coalition for Property Tax Justice, we are canvassing to prevent illegal and unnecessary home foreclosures. For years, Detroit inflated residents' property taxes, leaving residents facing staggering bills they could not pay—this year there are more than 23,000 homes at risk. There are state and federal programs that prevent foreclosure, but residents must be enrolled to take their homes off the list. We are canvassing to make sure people know about and can enroll in these programs before the March 31st foreclosure deadline. For more detailed information, check out the Foreclosure Canvassing Guide.
We are organizing canvasses every Saturday during February from 10AM-2PM, launching from Detroit Sip (7420 W McNichols Rd, Detroit, MI 48221). Sign up for as many as you can! We have lots of doors to knock.
The Coalition is recording a canvassing training on February 3rd from 10-11am that we will circulate, but we will also provide in-person training at Detroit Sip at 10am on Saturdays.
We know this doesn't align with all of our community's Shabbat practices; we decided to canvass on Saturdays to balance when our people are available and when Detroiters are at home. If you would like to canvass on another day, we can set you up!
We will make sure everyone has a partner to canvass with.
You should bring shoes you can walk in, a water bottle, and a portable phone charger if you have one!
Reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions!
