Monica Lewis-Patrick
Deeply disturbed by the water crisis in her home state of Michigan, Monica Lewis-Patrick set out to provide daily essentials to those in need. Through her work with We the People of Detroit, the organization she cofounded, Lewis-Patrick has set up emergency water stations, opened hotlines, delivered water, provided education, and conducted community research to raise awareness and to provide actionable data for change. Her grassroots approach coupled with a steadfast commitment to justice has inspired people of all backgrounds to come together and build communities they’re proud of.
Dr. Paul von Oeyen MMS, MD
Paul T. von Oeyen, MMS, MD is a retired High Risk Obstetrician who is also Facilitator of the Social Justice Mission Area Team, Detroit Metropolitan Association, United Church of Christ whom he represents on the People’s Water Board of Detroit. He completed undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University and his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center and Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Boston Hospital for Women – Harvard Medical School. He has served as Medical Director of the Family Birth Center, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, where he was on the Institutional Ethics Committee and has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan and Wayne State Medical Schools.
Nicole Hill
A full-time student and single mother, Nicole Hill had her water service terminated in 2014 with a bill totaling over five thousand dollars despite her consistent payments. One of the first Detroiters to share her story of living without water, Nicole is a leading voice on water rights. She has been interviewed by media outlets across the country. She and her family actively organize with People's Water Board Coalition, Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, and We the People of Detroit.

State Representative Stephanie Chang
State Representative Stephanie Chang is serving her second term representing Michigan’s 6th House District. Chang is the Minority Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Law and Justice and serves on the House Committees on Education Reform and Natural Resources. Much of her legislative work is focused on air quality, affordable and safe drinking water, education and criminal justice reforms. Before serving in the Legislature, Chang worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade. Chang is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degrees in public policy and in social work.
