Sustainability

A huge thanks goes out to Hazon - Detroit for supporting the environmental sustainability of this event and DJJ as a Hazon Seal of Sustainability Site! We'll have volunteers and signs onsite to help make the zero waste sorting system as clear and accessible as possible. Thanks for helping us divert waste from the Detroit incinerator and striving to make sure everyone here can Breathe Free.

A huge shout-out also to Detroit Institute of Bagels, a local vendor, for donating the dozens of bagels we'll be enjoying, Guerrilla Food Detroit for catering, and La Palma and Harmony Garden for donating side dishes.

"What's a Purim?"

Mazel Tov ("congratulations")! If you're asking, this means you're on the cusp of spending your first Purim with DJJ!

Purim is a Jewish holiday which, like many Jewish holidays, derives from a story. DJJ leaders Roz Schindler and Jake Ehrlich collaborated on a blog to unpack the Purim story a bit and explore how it & progressive Jewish community building are deeply aligned. The DJJ Purim spiel is a punchy, progressive, and passionate short play written and put on by members of our grassroots community. This year we're applying the Purim story to the unconstitutional tax foreclosure and housing displacement crisis in Detroit. As we wear costumes to amp up the absurdity, dance, & nosh hamentaschen (eat little triangle-shaped cookies representing fertility, & in our analysis femme power), we DJJ - Do Justice Jewishly. Join us.
