Illuminating Water Justice: A Hanukkah Gathering in Detroit

Join us for a DJJ gathering at the annual Menorah in the D celebration on Sunday December 2nd. Immediately after the official candle-lighting, we will gather at 6:30pm for song and ritual and to hear from speakers about local struggles for clean and affordable water. After the program, we will process to Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue where we will gather for refreshments and mingling.

What: A gathering of Metro Detroit Jews on the first night of Hanukkah to renew our commitment to water justice.

When: We'll meet at 6:30pm for about a 20 minute program, followed by a 10 minute procession to Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. We'll arrive there around 7pm to warm up, enjoy refreshments, and meet one another.

Where: Our meeting point is the Woodward Fountain in the middle of Campus Martius downtown (across the street from the Menorah in the D stage.) See the starred location on the map below.

What to bring: Yourself, friends and family. If you'd like, you can also bring a sign with a message like "Water is Life, "Water is a human right," or "Clean and Affordable Now", but we will also have extra signs available. The weather is looking good, and the temperature is expected to be in the 40s, but definitely suit up to be safe. Hand drums also encouraged!

Food: After the gathering at Campus Martius, kosher sufganiyot (donuts) and hot drinks will be served at Downtown Synagogue, while supplies last.

Parking: We recommend looking for parking near Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue (1457 Griswold St), and walking from there to Campus Martius (approximately a 10-minute walk.) Street parking is free on Sunday's and there are also a few paid lots. Keep in mind that there will be many people downtown for Menorah in the D, so we strongly recommend carpooling, and budgeting some time to find a spot.

Stay tuned for "8 Days of Water Justice": Keep your commitment to water justice burning after Sunday. We'll release videos every day December 2nd through 9th exploring the water crisis through a Jewish lens.
